Everybody loves getting something for free. Sometimes, though, it's nice to give back, too (especially if it's fun and FREE).
On Saturday, October 5, 2013, residents of Manhattan and Brooklyn will find two opportunities to have a good time while doing a good deed
First, Total Equity Now invites you to join your East, West, and Central Harlem neighbors at the 2nd Annual Literacy Across Harlem March, Book Drive & Community Celebration, a unique, inspiring, inter-generational opportunity to celebrate and promote reading and writing.
At 1:30 p.m. rally with your family, friends, and neighbors at one of two Literacy Across Harlem community-bookstore partners: La Casa Azul Bookstore (143 E. 103rd Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues) or Sister's Uptown Bookstore & Cultural Center (1942 Amsterdam Avenue at 156th Street). Bring two books: your favorite book of all time and a new or gently used book to donate to a Harlem child, teen, or adult living in a homeless shelter (or other transitional living facility) or studying in an adult and family literacy center.
At 2:00 p.m. walk together from either starting point along designated sidewalk routes to the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater (122nd & Mount Morris Park West) in Marcus Garvey Park.
At 3:00 p.m. arrive at the amphitheater and place your gently used reading gift on the stage - collectively building a small mountain of donated books - and enjoy a brief, interactive program!
Email firstname.lastname@example.org for further details or to register a participating group.
Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, United Way of New York City is proud to celebrate the 5th Annual LIVE UNITED Community Festival at Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
All New Yorkers are welcome to enjoy live entertainment from Brown Rice Family and other bands, as well as delicious food and family-friendly games. Guests will also have the opportunity to learn how they can become more involved in their communities in the critical areas of education, income and health via workshops about volunteer opportunities.
