Two free colorectal cancer seminars Feb. 8, and planning ahead for March events

This week features two free events for colorectal cancer caregivers and patients. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) hosts a caregivers panel in New York City on Wednesday afternoon, February 8. That evening, patients and caregivers across the nation can participate in a free online webinar that will present some of the most exciting research published at January's 2012 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium. Wednesday, Feb. 8: The Many Faces of Caregiving, 2:30 - 4 p.m. ET, Memorial Sloan-Kettering panel discussion, 1275 York Ave., Room M-107, New York, NY. Past and present caregivers will present this panel discussion to help provide caregivers with the resources, information, and support and discuss how to find a balance between their role as a spouse/friend/partner and caregiver. Wednesday, Feb. 8: Report from the 2012 GI Cancers Symposium, 8 - 9:30 p.m. ET, Fight Colorectal Cancer and Colon Cancer Alliance free online webinar. Dan Sargent, PhD, biostatistician for the gastrointestinal researh program at the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, is the featured speaker at this free webinar that details the most interesting research covered at the 2012 symposium. Dr. Sargent is involved in multiple ongoing clinical trials testing new methods for both colorectal cancer treatment and screening. Readers must register in advance for this webinar at GoToMeeting to receive the emailed dial-in number and password.

Register now for March events

It's not too early to sign up for March's National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month events. Pre-registration is now open for the first of 2012's Get Your Rear in Gear (GYRIG) 5K events to raise money for local colorectal cancer support. Pre-register online through February 28, or postmarked by U.S. mail by February 23, for the March 3 GYRIG 5Ks in Raleigh, N. Carolina or Savannah, Georgia, or the March 4 GYRIG 5K in Austin, Texas.

Pre-registration is also now open for the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) Undy5000 5K events in Sacramento, Calif. on March 3, in San Diego, Calif. on March 10, and in St. Louis, Missouri on March 31. Undy5000 are family friendly, fun 5K events where participants run in boxer shorts to raise awareness and funds for local community colorectal cancer screening programs.

Readers can also get ready now for National Dress in Blue Day, Friday, March 2. Dress in Blue Day is a community driven event to raise awareness about colorectal cancer by wearing blue. The CCA offers tips and a Dress in Blue Day pin up kit to help readers organize National Dress in Blue Day activities in their communities.
