Two exhibits open on Thursday, February 6, at Florida Gulf Coast University. The Interpreters opens in the Main Gallery of the Arts Complex, while Installation Collaboration debuts in the ArtLab.
1. The modern world is full of schedules, alarms, rushing, running - we fly through our days without thoroughly contemplating what we encounter and we rush toward the future without reflecting on the discards of our past. The Interpreters seek to capture those fleeting moments and hold them up for us to pause and meditate on what often goes unnoticed. Whether through realism or minimalism, reuse or reappropriation, the artists find inspiration from everyday objects and moments. The transformation of the commonplace into a complex intersection of plan and form brings forth something valuable and meaningful.
The exhibit highlights works by Babette Herschberger, Luis Garcia-Nerey, Juana Meneses, Laz Ojalde and John Sanchez -- featured artists from the ArtCenter/South Florida Residency Program in Miami. Their work encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and mixed media. Artists in the program are committed to experimentation and innovation while pursuing artistic and professional development. One of the goals is to contribute to a dynamic community of local, national and international artists and creative thinkers.
The opening will be accompanied by a 5:00 p.m. Gallery Talk with the exhibiting artists, followed by an opening reception from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
2. Visiting Instructor Sara Truman’s spring Contemporary Ceramics class invites the public to view Installation Collaboration in the Art Lab at FGCU Library. For this particular assignment, the class was split into four groups, each group creating a large-scale installation. Each idea is unique and inventive based on ideas discussed in lecture from current contemporary installation artists across media. The exhibition also opens at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 6.
Both exhibitions run through March 13, 2014.
The Main Gallery is located in the FGCU Arts Complex at 10501 FGCU Blvd S, Fort Myers FL 33965. For more information, please telephone 239.590.7199.
