This morning, Oct. 21, 2013, USA Today reports that a middle school student opened fire at a Nevada middle school. The student shot and killed one teacher and injured two students before turning the gun on himself. A press conference from law enforcement is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. today.
At 7:15 a.m. this morning, a student opened fire at Sparks Middle School, shooting and killing a teacher and injuring two others. Students were evacuated to Agnes Risley Elementary School and then to Sparks High School where parents were able to pick up their students. The shooter turned the gun on himself, ending his life.
One of the students is in critical condition and the other is in fair condition. Both students are at Renown Regional Medical Center. One of the students is undergoing surgery. The names of the two injured students have not been released.
Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) issued the following statement on the shooting:
“Today’s events at Sparks Middle School are unsettling and concerning. Thank you to the first responders for quickly moving the staff and students to safety. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims, students, families, teachers, and staff during this difficult time.”
