The Alamo Drafthouse will be screening two wildly different depictions of Eastern cinema. Sex and Zen will screen tonight at 10 p.m. and Bandits vs. Samurai Squadron will screen tomorrow at 7 p.m. Both films will run at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz.
As part of their “Asian Invasion” line-up, Sex and Zen is a lurid story of a married yet amorous scholar who embarks on a mission to sleep with other men’s wives. With assistance from a thief who can break into houses, the scholar agrees to an operation to advance his goal--replacing his anatomy with a horse’s! Believe it or not, the story is based on a three hundred year old novel.
Bandits vs. Samurai Squadron is a more populist tale of Kumokiri Nizaemon, a former samurai warrior who has abandoned his code to become the leader of a gang of thieves. Together they attempt to rob his former clan’s castle. The 35mm print of the film is presented by Criterion Collection and Janus Films.
