The Washington Humane Society (WHS) announced Oct. 4 that its humane law enforcement team has responded to four “horrifying” instances of animal cruelty in the last two days in Southeast D.C.
On Oct. 3 in the 600 block of 46th Place SE, officers found the body of a deceased gray/black tabby female cat with a crushed head. Nearby, they also discovered a brown/black "tiger striped" female cat with severe blunt trauma to the face and jaw; the cat was later euthanized.
Also on Oct. 3 in the woods behind 602 46th Place SE, officers found a brindle-and-white, pit bull-type male dog with bite wounds over his entire body. He also had three cuts across his neck, indicating someone may have tried to slit his throat. WHS said he was in "critical" condition.
About a half-mile away, in an alley in the 4300 block of Gorman Terrace SE, officers on Oct. 2 found a brown-and-white, pit bull-type female dog with severe bite wounds to her face, chest and front legs. They believe she was in a fight with another dog at another location and then dumped in the alley. She was later euthanized.
WHS believes the incidents may be connected due to their proximity and the similarity of the injuries. It is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible. Its humane law enforcement department can be reached at 202-723-5730.
