Two Atlanta restaurants top GQ Magazine's best of 2014

GQ has announced “The 12 Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2014” in the March issue, and Atlanta restaurants Gunshow and King + Duke both earned spots in the top 10. The magazine’s award-winning food correspondent Alan Richman ate his way across America to discover the best restaurants and compile a list of must-visit restaurants that make for a perfect night out.

Kevin Gillespie’s Gunshow is number seven on Richman’s list. Describing the Glenwood Park restaurant, Richman said, “Nothing is scattershot...I don't recall so many styles of cooking from one restaurant kitchen, and each dish is successful, because every cook specializes in the cuisine he or she knows best.” He also applauds the restaurant’s atmosphere, saying, “Gunshow has pulled off the improbable: It manages to be the most intimate restaurant in America without candles, flowers, or post-dinner petits fours.”

Rounding out the food critic’s top five is Ford Fry’s King + Duke in Buckhead. While Richman says at first, he “didn’t expect much” to come of his casual dinner, he quickly changes his mind. In his write-up for the restaurant, he says, “In the middle of the meal, I sat up straight and thought, This is the one. This is informal American dining, perfected.” He goes on to praise executive chef Joe Schafer’s slow-roasted lamb belly as “tender, luscious candied preparation [that] dazzled above all others” and calls out pastry chef Chrysta Poulos’ signature sticky toffee pudding dessert, Dates + Ale, as “pulverizingly perfect.”

Taking the list’s top honors is Austin’s Qui, a high-end restaurant with Asian and Texan influences on the east side of Austin that Richman dubs, “the most fascinating new restaurant in America.”

The March issue of GQ with the complete list is available on newsstands nationwide February 25, 2014.
