The University of Maryland’s women’s basketball team and Head Coach Brenda Frese hired two veterans of the program to fill two important positions. In an announcement on Friday, August 16th, Libby Ellis was revealed as the new director of basketball operations and Winston Gandy was named as the new director of recruiting operations.
A 2012 graduate of the university, Ellis was a four year manager for the Lady Terps. During her senior year, she held the position of director of operations-intern and assisted with scheduling, travel planning and general program operations. After graduating with a degree in kinesiology, she was hired on as the director of recruiting operations.
“We’re ecstatic for Libby to move into our director of basketball operations position,” said Head Coach Frese in an interview with Maryland Athletics. She then goes on to say, “She is more than ready for this next step in her career. She is a rising star in the making.”
While a student at the university, Gandy was a four year practice player for the Lady Terps. In May, he graduated with a degree in economics.
With Ellis moving on to director of basketball operations, Gandy is taking over the position she once held.
“Winston won all of us over with his selflessness for our program the last four years as a scout team player,” said Head Coach Frese in the same interview with Maryland Athletics. “We’re excited for Winston to now transition onto our staff as the director of recruiting operations.”
The Lady Terps ended last season with a 26-8 record and a trip to the Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament where they made it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen, their fifth Sweet Sixteen in eleven years. Four of five starters from last season are returning including two-time ACC Player of the Year Alyssa Thomas.
