Two alarm fire rips through apartments in Holmsburg

Shortly after noon fire officials received a call from someone reporting a fire at 8030 Ditman street reporting an apartment fire today, March 14 2014. As firefighters responded, they found a small amount of smoke billowing from a building far enough back to hinder access. Within five minutes, the small amount of smoke escalated to at least two units filled with thick, grey smoke.

At the same time, 911 call takers were on the phone with a woman who was trapped on her second floor balcony and told call takers that her oxygen tank exploded. That has not been confirmed. She was rescued and carted away to a waiting ambulance. Several other people were checked out by medics at the scene.

Firefighters quickly called a second alarm to help with evacuations and man power. extra hose had to be carried a great distance to get water on the fire. It was declared under control withing 40 minutes. Numerous representatives from the Fire Marshal's Office were on scene working to determine a cause. Numerous restoration companies and adjusters converged on the Holmsburg neighborhood.
