Four children and two adults are dead and at least one more victim is injured after a shooting at a suburban Houston home at approximately 6pm tonight. Harris County police have stated that the shooting was apparently spurred by a breakup in the family living in the home. The male suspect is in custody after engaging in a standoff with police and SWAT officers who arrived on scene. Authorities have blocked off the neighborhood and are heavily saturated in the area at this time. After the shooting was reported to the police an ambulance was the first to arrive. At least two people, one woman and one child had to be airlifted to a hospital. The child being airlifted died en route to the hospital. No word has been given on the condition of the surviving female victim.
The suspects relationship, if any, to the family is unclear at this time. One female victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head but was still able to tell police who the shooter was. The victim also told police that she was afraid that the shooter was on his way to another home where more family members live to shoot them as well. The victims quick thinking allowed police to intercept the suspect as he attempted to flee the scene of the shooting. Officers then pursued the man on a car chase that lasted approximately 30-minutes.
The chase ended after the suspect drove into a residential cul-de-sac 3 miles away from the home in which the shooting took place, and barricaded himself within his vehicle. The standoff between police, SWAT, a team of negotiators and the suspect lasted 3 hours before the suspect gave himself up. The identities of the victims are not being released at this time.
