The rapper came out strong with the single “Berzerk,” joined on stage by producer Rick Rubin acting as DJ, however, during much of the song it appeared Eminem was lip-syncing. This, of course, was not lost on Twitter users, many of whom were outraged by what they perceived took place.
Among the multitude of comments regarding Eminem’s performance was one by @jeremycox who tweeted, “If what you’re doing in the studio is so complicated, you can’t pull it off live, then don’t even bother recording it,” while @Greterman simply wrote, “Nice lip sync;. #Eminem ur better than that.”
In addition, @jessicak1111 tweeted, “Super disappointed with #Eminem’s lip sync performance on #SNL…” and @Krohnm wrote, “Disappointing to see this dude lip sync. I was hoping for better.”
A Spin article commenting on Eminem’s "SNL" performance, noted, “Here’s the guy who wins every rap Olympic gold medal, and he couldn’t even convincingly appear to be swimming.”
The 41-year-old rapper had at least one supporter, @xchrisxnobodyx, who tweeted, “#Eminem didn’t lip sync on SNL. You can clearly hear his voice over the music. Most rappers perform OVER their tracks… So. Yeah.”
Eminem also performed “Survival” on "SNL" with Skylar Grey instead of Liz Rodrigues, who collaborated with him on the album.
“The Marshall Mathers LP 2” is slated for release on Nov. 5.
