Twitter releases improved mobile apps

People in the Spokane area who use Twitter on their cellular phones or other mobile devices will be glad to know that the popular social media site just released updated apps for Android and the Apple iPhone.

On Tuesday, February 21, an update on the official Twitter blog gave a rundown of what users can expect.

According to the official Twitter blog, "Both apps bring back high-demand features, including the swipe shortcut, and they also introduce new design and functionality improvements."

The new apps feature an improved version of "find friends" that makes it easier to connect with people users know who are also on Twitter.  They also bring back the popular swipe shortcut.

The "swipe" feature allows users to view other people's profiles and respond to their tweets in a variety of ways without leaving their own Twitter Timelines.  Users can retweet or favorite other people's tweets, share them or reply to them.

One potentially useful thing about the new Android app is that it will work with popular ereaders such as Amazon's Kindle Fire and the Barnes and Noble NOOK Tablet.

According to the Twitter blog, "Twitter for Android is now optimized to run on Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as on the Kindle Fire (available today through the Amazon Appstore) and the Barnes & Noble NOOK Color and NOOK Tablet (available February 23 though the Barnes & Noble NOOK Store)."

Apple users may gain the most benefits out of the new apps.  Sam Laird of Mashable reported in a story posted on Tuesday, February 21 that the iPhone version has some features that used to only be available for Android devices.

"People who use Twitter from their iPhones will see the most changes, though. The company has returned the ability to press and hold text to copy the body of tweets and user profiles. And a new read-it-later option now saves links within tweets for delayed gratification," Laird said.

"To activate the 'Read Later Service' option, go to the Settings menu and click Advanced. That option will join choices to tweet, copy or email links via the Twitter mobile app’s sharing feature.

"For iPhone users, Twitter has also updated the design of the direct messages section and brought back the ability to mark all messages as unread by tapping a checkmark in the lower righthand corner. iPhone owners can change their font size, too."

People in the Spokane area who would like to try out the new mobile apps can download them from several places online.

Amazon offers the Android version for free on their website.  Apple users can get the free update from the iTunes App Store.  Android users can also find the new app and a variety of intriguing add-ons they may want to try out in the Android Market.
