Twitter reacts to Obama statement on UN attack, Koran burning

Saturday President Barack Obama condemned the attack on the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan as well as the Koran burning in Florida by Pastor Terry Jones. On Twitter, reactions to Obama's statement were mixed.

Saturday President Obama issued the following statement:

Today, the American people honor those who were lost in the attack on the United Nations in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan. Once again, we extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who were killed, and to the people of the nations that they came from. The desecration of any holy text, including the Quran, is an act of extreme intolerance and bigotry. However, to attack and kill innocent people in response is outrageous, and an affront to human decency and dignity. No religion tolerates the slaughter and beheading of innocent people, and there is no justification for such a dishonorable and deplorable act. Now is a time to draw upon the common humanity that we share, and that was so exemplified by the UN workers who lost their lives trying to help the people of Afghanistan.

On Twitter reaction to Obama's statement was mixed, with most reactions being favorable towards Obama's treatment of the issue.  One of the most common tweets was some variation of the following:

Obama: "The desecration of any holy text, including the Koran, is an act of extreme intolerance and bigotry."

As to be expected, many Tweets did little more than point to relevant news coverage on the web. And while it is fair to say the majority of the Twitterverse was either neutral or favorable to Obama's reaction, others were not so charitable:

I don't know why Obama is mad about Koran being burned. He has already incinerated our constitution

Anyone want to bet that Obama has a Koran with him in the WH

Barack Obama condemns Koran burning as 'extreme intolerance and bigotry'” so what about the murder of UN workers; exactly what is that!

Obama condemns Koran burning 'bigotry' // He's silent when gays are hanged & women stoned

Funny how Obama denounces burning the Koran, but not the murder of missionaries who were handing out Bibles.

Obama's statement came on a second day of Afghan violence inspired by the Koran burning in Florida. While Pastor Terry Jones remains unapologetic for what President Obama has termed an act of "extreme intolerance and bigotry," others worry that the violent response to the desecration of Islam's holy text may grow and spread throughout the region.
