Twitter is looking at launching its own instant messaging app. Reports surfaced today that the company has been looking at retooling its direct messaging service. As part of the redesign, the company is apparently seriously considering launching a standalone messaging application as well.
While there hasn't been any sort of talk about a strict timeframe, All Things D says that sources claim the launch will be "sometime soon." There are noticeable drawbacks from launching a service like this. There are already plenty of instant messaging applications on the market these days.
Twitter does have name brand recognition working for it though. There is also a pretty good chance that the company would put a different spin on the messaging service in order to make it stand out from the crowd.
There was a time when the social media market was so crowded that no one thought Twitter would be able to face off against the likes of Facebook. Instead, the company has made enough of a name for itself that it is one of the kings of that market.
The microblogging service has not officially confirmed that it is planning this new app.
