Twitter CEO Dick Costello said during his Mobile World Congress keynote yesterday that he sees no need for Twitter to make a phone, even though he does see a need to better integrate Twitter into existing phone platforms.
On Tuesday, HTC unveiled two "Facebook" phones, and there were rumors that Twitter would be following suit. Twitter shut down these rumors very quickly before they had the chance to spread though.
Dick also said that he hopes to see better integration that will allow Android phones to take a photo and automatically tweet it. He also unveiled that 40% of all tweets come from mobile devices and that more than half of all Twitter users use more than one platform.
Local Perspectives
I interviewed some residents of Princeton about their opinions on a "Twitter" phone. As usual, the people were very divided in their opinions.
"I think that Twitter is doing the right thing by not making a Twitter phone. This maintains their independence from Facebook by showing that they will not follow what they do. I also don't believe the Facebook phone was necessary, as there are plenty of apps that allow users to access their accounts, and Twitter is doing the right thing by abstaining."
"I was really looking forward to a Twitter phone that would have full Twitter integration, but seems like I'll have to live with Twitter apps."
