First, it's true, any social media platform can be a time-waster. That's obvious when you watch people in coffee shops on their Blackberrys and iPhones texting away. Then you see the panic in their eyes when they realize that the cup of coffee has gone cold and they're now 20 minutes late getting back to work. It's also obvious when your purpose is to use social media for chit-chat.

But to take that example and say that all social media, especially Twitter, is a waste of time is simply not true.

As outlined in this post by Chris Garrett on the Social Media Examiner blog, there are ways to get value out of Twitter, and it's based on how you use it.

He lists 9 benefits he's personally seen through his use of Twitter:

  1. Networking connections
  2. Traffic
  3. Leads
  4. Direct sales
  5. Insights
  6. Content
  7. Answers
  8. News
  9. Inspiration

And he describes how each of these benefits was experienced.

This short post is an excellent summary of what you can get out of using Twitter. It's also a good summary of what you can do for others on Twitter. Read it. Set up your account. Start using Twitter. Join the conversation.
