Twitter and American Express team up to bring 'Hashtag Purchases'

Purchasing just got easier for those of you who are American Express customers and Twitter users. The popular credit card company announced that they are partnering with social media giant Twitter to allow purchases through the use of hashtags.

So, what exactly are hashtags anyway? In simple terms, hashtags are words used on Twitter that are used to follow, look up or simply search for whatever a user is interested in. By placing the "#' symbol in front of the word, it is considered a 'hashtag'.

The way that American Express (AmEx) users purchase on Twitter using these hashtags is relatively simple. When AmEx posts a deal that a user likes, they simply retweet the deal with the hashtag. AmEx will then repond with a corresponding hashtag (@AmexSync) that the user must reply to within 15 minutes. After that, the purchase is made and is shipped to the customers address associated with the AmEx card.

The two companies launched the AmEx Sync program with a $25 gift card for only $15 promotion, but plan on offering products from Amazon, Microsoft's XBox 360 and products from Sony. A full list of products to be offered will be shown on the @AmericanExpress Twitter page begin Feb. 13.

To take full advantage of these offerings, Twitter users must sync their accounts with AmEx at the AmEx setup page and be sure that the Twitter account is a public account. In order to capitalize on the special deals, both the requesting hashtag and replying hashtag must be tweeted publicly.
