Twisted Metal demo impressions

Twisted Metal is the longest running franchise in PlayStation history.  A demo was released on the PSN this past week.  The game feels true to its roots.  The consumers of Baltimore who have waited patiently to experience the franchise on a console once again will not be disappointed in the least.

The demo features both offline and online gameplay.  The offline deathmatch mode is ridiculously hard.  The difficulty seems like it has been cranked up to the max.  All the enemies seem focused on you instead of trying to kill everyone.  Most matches will end quickly due to players dying within five minutes or less.

The online modes are where the most of the fun is.  Players can engage in deathmatch against one another or in a new mode called Nuke.  The objective of Nuke mode is for players on one team to destroy the other team’s statue.  The team destroying the statue must capture a faction leader and then locate the missile that must be fired off.  Once the missile is found, the faction leader must be kept near the vehicle that fires the missiles so that they can be fired at the statue.  The opposing team must stop all of this from happening.  There are five rounds in all. Objectives switch back and forth between teams in each round.

The levels are about 10 times bigger than they were in previous Twisted Metal games.  People can now drive right through houses.  There are old and new weapons to use for massive destruction.  The speed of the vehicles has also been cranked up significantly.  Everything got so chaotic that it was hard to tell exactly what was going on.  This was a good feeling and does not hinder the gameplay by any means.

Twisted Metal for the PS3 looks like it will do the franchise justice.  Some purist may complain about each vehicle not corresponding to a unique character, but the soul of the series definitely is intact.  Fans should undoubtedly pick this game up when it releases on Valentines Day.
