Twins separated at birth were reunited after 25 years, and it all began with one YouTube video. Samantha Futerman, one of the twins who lived in Los Angeles and worked as an actress, got a message on Facebook about a year ago from some strange 25-year-old girl living in London, reported ABC News on Feb. 11, 2014.

“On February 1st, 2013, I got [a] message on Facebook from a girl in London. It said she had seen me in [a] YouTube video, then after looking my name up online, saw that we were both adopted, and born on the same day, in the same city. When I saw her profile, it was crazy. She looked just like me.”

Samantha Futerman’s twin sister, Anais Bordier, who is a French fashion designer, lived thousands of miles away in London.

When Anais watched a YouTube video with Samantha Futerman and saw what appeared to be her mirror image, the resemblance was so unbelievable that she had to follow her instinct.

“When I looked at the video, I — it was, like, shocking …. You can’t imagine that you might have a twin sister somewhere that you don’t know about.”

From YouTube, to a Google search, to Facebook, to chatting on Skype, Samantha and Anais discovered that they both had been born in Busan in South Korea on the same day.

Even though Anais’ first language is French, her English is fluent. After sharing their life’s stories via social media, the 25-year-old girls first met in London and then again in Los Angeles.

By sharing their stories, Anais, who grew up as an only child, and Samantha, who grew up with two brothers, the two girls discovered that after they had been born, they were each placed in separate foster care agencies and adopted separately.

Anaïs, like Samantha, was born in South Korea on Nov. 19, 1987. At the age of three months, she was adopted by a couple and raised as an only child in the suburbs of Paris after having spent the first years of her life in Belgium. She was always fascinated with the arts and graduated from the acclaimed Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design in London with a degree in fashion design.

Samantha was placed into a different foster care but was also adopted at the age of about three months. She grew up with her adoptive family in Verona in New Jersey. Like Anais, she loved the arts. She graduated from the Professional Performing Arts School in New York City and received a BFA in Theatre Arts from Boston University.

DNA test results confirmed that they were indeed twins.

Together, the reunited twins that were separated at birth, returned to South Korea after 25 years. Their life stories, their attendance of the International Korean Adoptee Associations (IKAA) 2013 conference, and their visit to the adoption agencies that had separated them have become the subject of the twins’ documentary which they hope to submit to the 2015 film festivals and which highlights the potentially life-changing power of the social media. “Without the world of social media, we would have never been able to connect.”
