Twincharged Lotus Exige

A spunky canyon run with a twincharged Lotus Exige is not for the timid. Bringing the best of both forced induction worlds together in an extremely light weight package makes for an exhilarating ride. Infamously tuned Lotus suspension helps keep the spunky sprite tamed to the pavement while the twincharged system boosts the vehicle into the stratosphere.Twincharging is a forced induction system that makes use of both a belt driven supercharger and an exhaust gas driven turbocharger. The system is ideal because the supercharger makes up for turbo lag, while the turbo makes up for the high RPM's where superchargers tend to flatten out. It's a perfect symphony of tuned induction that only few dare try.

When building a twincharged system, it's not exactly easy to tune. You've got extreme amounts of air to compensate with by an adequate fueling system, as well as confusing plumbing. One way of constructing a twincharged system is to allow the supercharger to feed air into the turbocharger, and then into the intake manifold. Setting it up the opposite way will not yield the results you are looking for, but feel free to tinker with the theory and see what works for you. Beyond initial plumbing diagrams, you must also consider detonation and knock prevention. Now the fun begins!

An intercooler must be placed somewhere in this system to keep detonation from high intake temperatures at bay. Some say one intercooler is enough, while I believe an intercooler from turbo to supercharger, and supercharger to intake manifold is much better. No matter how you compress air, heat will be generated. Either way it's not easy to plumb, so you might as well do it right and use an intercooler for each compressor! Check out the video below of a twincharged Lotus Exige as it rips through the canyons making use of it's intricate forced induction system.
