'Twilight Saga: Eclipse' draws $750K box office on re-release weekend -- It's nothing like its opening box office weekend figures, which were nearly $65 million; however, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse still earned nearly a quarter million dollars on its re-release weekend, just weeks after its initial opening last June. The figure is an estimate reported by boxofficemojo.com.
Summit Entertainment re-released Eclipse, starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner and based on the bestselling novel by Stephenie Meyer, over the September 10-12, 2010 weekend. The reason was reportedly to celebrate the fictional character, Bella Swan's, "birthdays." In the Twilight series of novels, the protagonist, Bella Swan, was born on September 13, 1987 and is "reborn" as a vampire on September 10.
The real reason for the re-release appears to be to continue to make as much money from the franchise as possible. To date, Eclipse alone has made nearly $300 million domestically and over $370 million in foreign sales. The DVD/Blu-ray editions of Eclipse are not expected to be released until December, just in time for holiday sales. Eclipse is the third movie in a planned 5-part series of Twilight films.
The $750,000 figure places Eclipse above Toy Story 3 and Avatar: Special Edition for the same weekend. Avatar was re-released in theaters on August 27, 2010 with additional footage.
Production for the first of the 2-part finale movies based on Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final book in the vampire series, is scheduled to begin in early November. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg is reportedly working on revising the scripts for both Parts 1 and 2 of the movie, which is promised not to shy away from the intense scenes depicted in the novel.
