New Products - This weekend, Amazon.com has allowed fans to pre-order the popular movie series The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn in a two-disc DVD set and on Blu-ray.
Even though "Breaking Dawn" won't be released until February 11, millions of buyers have pushed the title into the No. 1 slot on the online retailer's Movies & TV section.
"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" earned $283.5 million in worldwide sales in its opening weekend in November 2011. The movie, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, accomplished this feat despite scoring a low 26 percent rating on cinema site rottentomatoes.com.
Amazon vs. Netflix >
It appears Amazon.com is positioning itself to compete with Netflix on a limited basis. On Friday, the retailer announced that its subsidiary "has partnered with BBC Worldwide in a deal that will give its members streaming access to . . . [BBC programming] content."
With $34 billion in annual revenue, Amazon has the muscle to push Netflix around given the latter's recent financial woes. Netflix has less than $800 million in annual revenue and is losing a lot of money due to movie studios demanding more royalty fees.
Millions of customers have left Netflix since the latter half of 2011.
