New Moon, the latest in the Twilight movie series was released on Friday and opening weekend sales made it the third largest opening weekend ever. But Twilight fans in Utah made that number even higher.
The Megaplex theater in South Jordan, Utah was the highest grossing theater in the nation for the release of New Moon, while the Sandy theater was the second highest, and the Gateway theater came in fifth in the nation. Prices of Utah movie tickets are considerably less than other major cities in the US, and those theaters were still ranked in the top five.
In the five largest theaters in Utah, almost 190,000 people watched New Moon this weekend. Many theaters across the country were using all of their screens to show New Moon and many were still sold out throughout the weekend.
On Friday, New Moon made $72.7 million and broke the one day box office record, beating out The Dark Knight which had the previous record of $67.2 million. New Moon made $142.8 million for its opening weekend, making it the third largest grossing opening weekend ever, behind the Batman movie, The Dark Knight in 2008 and Spiderman III in 2007.
