Little Brooke Greenberg who stopped aging when she was around two, lived to be 20 years old, remaining the size of a two-year-old until her death on Oct. 24, 2013, according to news reports released on Oct. 29 by ABC News.
Brooke's funeral was Sunday at a Baltimore-area synagogue. The family privately mourned the death of the toddler, going through the shiva, a tradition of their Jewish faith.
As reported in "Can a 20-year-old woman in a toddler's body help solve the mysteries of aging?" Brooke baffled doctors for two decades as they tried to solve the mystery of how she apparently never aged. They discovered various parts of her body aged at different levels.
At 20, she still had her baby teeth which appeared to doctors to be about 8 years old. Her bones appeared to have aged approximately 10 years. Her face and skin appeared not to have aged in 18 years.
Besides her slow aging, Brooke also overcame a series of mysterious ailments including perforated stomach ulcers, a stroke and a brain tumor which disappeared after the Greenberg's bought a casket for the little girl.
The condition has been labeled Syndrome X and only a few cases have ever been reported. Doctors hope some of what they learned from Brooke and others with the condition will help slow the aging process.
