Twitter developers announced Friday that users will have two months to prepare for an upcoming change that will increase the character length of a link code, while also decreasing the characters in a message.

Jason Costa, a Twitter developer, confirmed in a blog post that the t.co link wrapper maximum length will be extended from 20 to 22 characters for non-https URLs and 21 to 23 characters for https URLs.
Posting a link usually takes up 20 characters, which leaves about 120 characters to post a tweet.
After the update is implemented, users will have 118 or 117 (secure links) to post their messages to the world.
The announced changes will take into effect Feb. 6 for developers and rolled out for everyone else on Feb. 20. Twitter is giving the two-month window so developers can update their account applications.
“Two weeks later on February 20th, 2013, we will begin generating and returning t.co URLs with this new maximum length,” wrote Costa. “Ensure that your application is prepared to handle this change by that date.”
Reasons for the change have yet to be announced and the company has not yet responded to requests for comments from any news media outlet.
Although the change is meant to be beneficial, there has been some outrage across the Twitter universe over the two-character subtraction.
“Ugh. Stupid twitter making every url a t.co link. That link was to adult space camp, even though it totally looked like spam,” wrote one Twitter commenter.
“Is this supposed to be an upgrade? I’m sure this will bring with it some measure of pain and annoyance. I really enjoy it when I send out a tweet with 0 characters left,” another user tweeted.
