(WNBC) THE BIGGEST LOSER In this Season 13 premiere, 10 pairs of contestants show up at the ranch and discover that not only will they be split from their loved ones, but they must also compete against them. Bob Harper and Dolvett Quince return as the trainers, guiding the competitors toward a $250,000 grand prize. Alison Sweeney hosts.
8 P.M. (ABC Family) SWITCHED AT BIRTH Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano) clash when Bay’s biological father, Angelo (Gilles Marini), shows up in this first-season winter premiere. Kathryn (Lea Thompson) goes behind the back of her husband, John (D. W. Moffett), to speak with the nurse Angelo thinks could help them win the lawsuit against the hospital that mixed up the babies at birth.
8 P.M. (WNET) EGYPT'S GOLDEN EMPIRE
8 P.M. (WCBS) NCIS An investigation into the killing of a Navy commander leads to the location of Special Agent E. J. Barrett (Sarah Jane Morris) in this winter premiere.
9 P.M. (WCBS) NCIS: LOS ANGELES Nell (Renée Felice Smith) goes undercover at the Defense Department. Miguel Ferrer guest stars as Owen Granger, the new assistant director, who immediately questions the ability of Hetty (Linda Hunt) to lead the team.
9 P.M. (WLIW) MASTERPIECE MYSTERY: The Inspector George Gently series begins tonight with the pilot episode. Fans of Inspector Linley and Inspector Morse will enjoy.
9 P.M. (National Geographic) TABOO Season 8 begins with a look at the secret lives of people like Chloe, a chemist who poses as a paraplegic and uses a wheelchair but is fully capable of walking, and Todd Waters a businessman with a million-dollar house who masquerades as a homeless man.
9 P.M. (TLC) WHAT NOT TO WEAR Despite her pink hair and loud wardrobe, Beryl claims to hate attracting attention and says she wants to focus on her career. Stacy London and Clinton Kelly help her clean up her mixed message.
10 P.M. (WNET 13) FRONTLINE: OPIUM BRIDES Najibullah Quraishi reports on the collateral damage of the Afghan government’s opium-eradication program: farmers forced to repay money borrowed from drug gangs, some with links to the Taliban, or give their daughters to traffickers, often to be used for sex.
10 P.M. (BBC America) JAMIE’S AMERICAN ROAD TRIP The British chef Jamie Oliver explores the culture and food of the United States in this six-part series, starting in Los Angeles, where the country’s largest concentration of Mexican immigrants lives a few miles east of the Hollywood sign.
10 P.M. (WNBC) PARENTHOOD Zeek (Craig T. Nelson) tries to please his mother (Frances Sternhagen) on her birthday by forcing the Braverman clan to take an impromptu trip.
