On Feb. 16, 2013, a reality TV show featuring Reeva Steenkamp aired in South Africa—just two days after she was shot dead by her boyfriend, Olympic star Oscar Pistorius, in his Pretoria home.
The series “Tropika Island of Treasure” was filmed in 2012 and features Steenkamp and several other celebrities competing in Jamaica.
According to USA Today, her last wish was that her family watch her on the show, as she was extremely proud of her participation on the project. Executive Producer Samantha Moon said Steenkamp would have wanted to the show to air despite her tragic death.
“Tropika” aired on the South African Broadcasting Corp. and showed the model laughing, smiling and hauntingly blowing a kiss to the camera.
Steenkamp was shot and killed by Pistorius, nicknamed the “Blade Runner” due to his prosthetic legs, on Feb. 14 in what the athlete claims was an accident.
Prosecutors in Pretoria argue Pistorius killed his girlfriend of only four months in cold blood.
A neighbor of the Olympian told South African newspaper Beeld the couple engaged in a shouting match just hours before police were called to Pistorius’ upscale gated community.
The publication notes that Steenkamp, 29, a law school graduate, was shot in the head, pelvis, chest and hand.
According to the New York Daily News, the model fled to the bathroom after she and the Olympian fought, writing Pistorius shot her through a closed door with a handgun.
Shortly after the incident, a weeping Pistorius appeared in court, charged with Steenkamp’s murder. His next court appearance is slated for Tuesday when a bail hearing will be held.
If convicted of murder, Pistorius could face life in prison.
