“A Paley Center for Media Special” aired yesterday evening on WPMI, channel 15 at 8 p.m. CST called “TV’s Funniest of the Funniest”. The special re-played American’s audience choices of the top clips from many favorite sitcoms that ran for the past few decades.
Betty White narrated the show that aired for two hours. This was different from the usual specials that only show bloopers made by the stars. This one was supposed to make television viewers laugh the evening away. The show focused on the top 30 television moments from the past 60 years.
Unfortunately it wasn’t as good as it could have been. There were so many skits or bit parts of the past shows that just didn’t give the shows’ titles justice. Out of all the selections there were really only four show segments that made you laugh out loud and took your breath away. Some were cute enough to crack a smile while others had nothing that seemed humorous at all which left one wondering why they even was considered for the special.
The four that topped the charts in humor, great comedy segments and registered high laugh levels included the following as they appeared in rank on the special.
#1 – “I Love Lucy” show – The clip that was shows was the most inspiring comedy skit to hit the airways and always brought laughter for all who viewed the show. The skit was flat-out-funny! This one everyone can remember as Lucy and Ethel were hired to work in a chocolate factory to wrap chocolates that come down on a conveyor belt. The belt goes faster and faster and the two icons of the show couldn’t keep up with the speed the chocolates were coming towards them. To prevent being fired they couldn’t allow any chocolates to make it to the end unwrapped. So to keep that from happening they popped chocolates into their mouths, down their shirts and into their hats to hide them from the mean looking female supervisor who inevitably yelled to speed up the conveyor belt at the end. Their actions and expressions are still priceless to see!
The “I Love Lucy” show was definitely placed right in the number one spot!
#5 – “The Cosby Show” – Here Cliff and Theo start out talking about getting good grades in school. Theo explains that he doesn’t believe that good grades are important because he just want to be and work like the regular people. Eventually Cliff sits him down and goes through what it would cost to live like a regular person and Theo is thoroughly surprised. Laughs are bold when Theo says he’ll definitely have a girlfriend and Cliff pulls the remainder of the money they simulated this discussion with away as fast as lightening.
“The Cosby Show” should have been placed in the number two spot!
#12 – “The Golden Girls” – Every one of the shows that Betty White portrayed the character Rose was always a hit. No one could help themselves but laugh and have an enjoyable time watching television. This segment started out with Rose and Ernie dealing with Ernie’s inability to have a physical relationship with Rose. We find them out to dinner in a fancy restaurant discussing friendship and that would be enough to surf ice if necessary. When all of a sudden the question is posed what exactly is sex and they go back and forth on a role that has the audience cracking up as they build up their own excitement. From clunky old bodies thrashing about, to sweating, being flushed, messed hair, being out of breath and losing an earring until they both can’t take it anymore and Rose yells out, check please!
“The Golden Girls” show would have been best placed in the number 3 spot!
#14 – “Roseanne” – There was so many segments that could have been picked but viewers grabbed the right one for this special. Roseanne and Jackie’s father just passed away and they were making arrangements for the funeral. It started off with calling family members to tell them the sad news. Jackie gets on the phone with her Aunt Barbara who from the sound of it was hard-of-hearing and the laughs begin. Jackie tells her that Dad is gone, Dad has passed away, Dad is dead, DEAD and still her Aunt doesn’t get it. Finally Jackie tells her that Dad is fine and sends his love. Jackie then turns to Roseanne and tells her she isn’t doing that again and you can’t make me.
This “Roseanne” segment should have been placed in the number 4 spot!
The two hour special was a nice change from many shows that have been airing lately. The comedy that was expected was short lived since very few segments really brought out the laugh factor. The show could have lasted a half-an-hour to produce the same amount of humor brought to television viewers.
Some may disagree if a few of their favorite sitcoms glued them into watching were part of the special.
What is your take on the special; “TV’s Funniest of the Funniest”!
