TV ratings: 'Touch' starts strong for Fox; Marg Helgenberger's exit boosts 'CSI'

Fox made a pretty wise decision in launching "Touch" with a special preview episode after "American Idol," as evidenced by the fact that the premiere ratings give them reason to celebrate.

  • Overall, 11.9 million people caught the show following a new episode of "American Idol," thus making "Touch" (with its 3.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic) the second-most-watched new drama of the season behind "Once Upon a Time." To the credit of Jennifer Morrison and company, this show did not have the same sort of mammoth lead-in.
  • As for "Idol," the show was down again to a 6.4 rating -- not only is this a drop of more than 13% from last week's premiere, it also is a drop of 30% from the equivalent broadcast last year. (Granted, the caveat here is that "Idol" was a two-hour episode last year at this time.)
  • Marg Helgbenberger's exit on "CSI" turned into a ratings winner, as the show drew season highs of 14 million viewers along with a 3.3 rating in the demo. Granted, it also had zero competition really.
