TV ratings: 'American Idol' goes up, but still loses to 'Big Bang Theory'

the battle between "American Idol" and "The Big Bang Theory" in the ratings is intensifying, but yet again the hit CBS comedy managed to win out in the battle for the 8:00 p.m. Eastern timeslot.

  • "Idol" ended up scoring a 5.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic for its hour-long episode, which was an increase of two tenths from the week before. However, during its half-hour against "Big Bang" it only scored a 5.2.
  • Meanwhile, "Big Bang" brought out the big guns yet again and scored a 5.5 rating and over 16 million viewers. This led a strong night for the network, as "Person of Interest" scored a 3.3 and over 15 million viewers -- with the rating tying a personal best for the show.
  • Despite not having a gimmick or an experiment as a plot point this week, "Grey's Anatomy" did quite well in posting a 3.9 rating for ABC -- easily the best of their night.
  • NBC ultimately had a mix of good and bad news -- while "30 Rock" was up to a 1.6 rating this week, "The Office" only drew a 2.5 -- its worst rating since April 2005 when the show was still starting out.
