TV One offers trip to see National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Black List’ exhibit

TV One wraps its broadcast of the three-part documentary series “The Black List” on Sunday (Feb. 19), but viewers nationwide have until Feb. 29 to win a trip to DC's National Portrait Gallery to view the accompanying photographic exhibit, which features all 50 of the African Americans in the series.

The “Black List” project, which also includes a book of portraits, is a collaboration between portrait photographer/director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and journalist Elvis Mitchell, who interviewed the 50 individuals - among them Colin Powell, SlashSean “Diddy” Combs, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Richard Parsons, Whoopi Goldberg, Bill T. Jones, Vernon Jordan, Marc Morial, Toni Morrison, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Chris Rock, John Legend and Rev. Al Sharpton. Each in the diverse group shares candid stories and revealing insights into the black experience in America.

Volume 1” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008, and all three documentaries made their television debuts on HBO. TV One, which recently acquired ownership of the documentaries from Freemind Ventures, will premiere “Volume 3” on Sunday (Feb. 19) from 8-9 p.m. [Watch a clip at left.] Rebroadcasts of "Volume 2" and "Volume 1" will follow at 9 and 10 p.m., respectively.

“’The Black List’ is an important work that seeks to redefine the terms black and blacklist for the world,” said TV One President and CEO Wonya Lucas.  “There is no better home for ‘The Black List’ than TV One as we seek to share the depth and the breadth of the black experience with the broadest audience possible.”

In honor of Black History Month, TVOne.tv is hosting a national “Black List” timeline contest, where viewers can upload a photo and essay of 300 words or less explaining how their life was impacted by a Black List icon. The contest, which runs through Feb. 29, offers a weekly prize of an Amazon Kindle Fire pre-loaded with a copy of “The Black List” book.

The grand prize winner from the weekly entries will score an all-expense paid trip to D.C. for a special tour of “The Black List” exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington. TV One, based in Sliver Spring, Md., has provided the museum with access to footage from the documentaries to enhance the exhibition.
