Turquoise at ADAM Spring 2010 (pic: Style.com)
Time to follow the fashion leader! Pantone who has just announced THE color for the year 2010: Turquoise (PT15-5519).
For those who don’t know, Pantone is the world's leading color analyst and is years ahead of us in discovering color inspirations and setting the color standard every season. If my timing is correct, they are finalizing and boxing up Fall 2011 colors to present to fashion designers, interior designers and artists alike. Their keen sense and beautifully organized array of colors is always exciting and as a designer the best part about starting a new season: the color forecast. So with Pantone forecasting colors seasons ahead it’s only appropriate that they do a “Color of the Year” prediction! Using elements of world status, fashion evolution and trend cycles, they choose a single color that will represent strongly throughout the year on all levels of fashion from couture to mass market.
Well, Pantone is feeling very optimistic about this upcoming year 2010. There is something bright, exciting and mood altering about their choice of Turquoise. So what does the ideal of Turquoise say about our fashion futures? When I think of turquoise, I envision clear waters, tropical breezes and cocktails with pink umbrellas. I also envision the American Southwest. Indians, adobe, pottery and authentic turquoise and silver oversized rings, cuffs and necklaces. Either way, this is escapism at it’s best. And that is exactly the point Pantone is making with this color choice. Escapism. Regardless of what is happening in the world around us, can’t our fashion take us to a higher place? A place of happiness, bliss, and umbrella’ed cocktails?
The best part is that Turquoise is going to fit very nicely into your existing closet. Turquoise, while bright, is actually a neutral so you’ll be surprised that a turquoise will go with practically any color. And depending on your turq flavor, you can be daring with turq shorts like at Derek Lam, Peter Som, and Brian Reyes. Or, you can be more subtle by wearing turq accessories to pop that look like at Diane von Furstenberg, Nanette Lepore and Catherine Malandrino. Me? I'll rock the shorts and the accessories... and maybe at the same time. From your Editor-in-Chic... I'll see you on the streets!
PS: As a personal side bar... remember my colorful outlook article from my Spring 2010 runway review back in the Fall? Click here Bright color was everywhere and guess what? Turquoise was throughout!... I was so on this! Pat on the back... and a pat on the back for my hip mom for suggesting these new shoes fro me.... with turquoise!
