The Milwaukee Mustangs, who ply their trade in the Arena Football League, may have finally gotten the hang of it.
Lesson learned.
Okay, we get it!
You tend to win more football games of any variety -- from flag football to the NFL -- if you manage to win the turnover game.
It is one of the few occupations where it is much better to receive than to give.
Charity be damned. It begins at home. The more selfish the better.
And so it was when the 'stangs galloped into Utah to take on the Blaze Saturday night.
They rode out of town with a 65-53 win on the shores of the Great Salt Lake.
The Mustangs literally had takeaways from beginning to end in this victory.
Milwaukee kicker Garrett Lindholm scooped up a fumble on his opening kickoff and Kelvin Rodgers, who has played the secondary position like a swarm of gnats this year, had a 'Pick 6' on the final play to seal the deal.
All told, the Mustangs had seven turnovers this night, including five recovered fumbles in the first half alone.
The end result is a 3-6 record for Milwaukee at the halfway point in the season. Utah now stands at 4-4.
QB RJ Archer is getting more comfortable as the year rolls on. He is making quicker reads, which is allowing him to stretch the field and take advantage of his talented corps of wideouts.
For example, in the first half, Archer launched a 49-yard bomb which found Dwayne Eley, Jr. for a score.
After the intermission, one of Archer's arrows went for 30 yards to future hall-of-famer Damian Harrell that led to a TD by Brent Holmes.
But the 'stangs are gaining on their opponents in other ways as well.
Don't look now, but Mykel Benson has become an absolute juggernaut on the ground.
The formula is a simple one: Take snap, hand off to Benson, add six points to the scoreboard. Repeat as necessary.
Benson had three touches on terra firma against the Blaze and has averaged more than one per contest thus far.
In a game that is usually dominated through the air, Milwaukee has one of the best smash-mouth weapons out there.
No finesse. Just straight ahead yardage.
Milwaukee must keep it up if it wants to make up ground in the East Division.
The Cleveland Gladiators lost this weekend and more of that will be been needed if the Mustangs are to start their climb.
Of course, the team has to keep on winning its own games.
The 'stangs, which have a bye this week, return to action on Thursday, May 26th, when they take on the Orlando Predators at the Bradley Center. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Tickets are available for this game and the remaining home slate and are available at the BC box office, through Ticketmaster, at www.MkeMustangs.com or by calling the team's office at 414-224-4000.
