Turner Contemporary, Genius of Illumination: Queen Elizabeth's week of arts

With visits to both the Turner Contemporary Gallery and the Genius of Illumination since Thursday, Queen Elizabeth has focused her week on the arts. At the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate, Kent last Friday, the Queen met Tracey Emin and talked to her about paintings and the artist's plan to stage her own exhibition.

Tracey Emin thinks the British Royal Family is brilliant

According to reports, the renowned artist said that the Queen and royal family in general were doing a “brilliant job.” Emin will take part in the “Face Britain” project, launched by Prince Charles last month, which is part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The gallery was opened earlier this year and, according to “Kent Online,” has drawn 300,000 visitors already and helped to revitalize a once-dying town.

Both Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth were in Margate, Kent together and walked around the Old Town area, where they greeted well-wishers, visited schoolchildren, and admired fancy cupcakes in a small local bakery, one of several businesses now supported thanks to the arrival of the gallery. They also met crew from the local lifeboat rescue team.

However, they were not present for the annual commemoration of Armistice Day, which included a minute of silence and the playing of “The Last Post” at 11 a.m. Earlier in the day, Prince Philip had opened the Field of Remembrance outside Westminster Abbey.

Queen, Prince Philip admire illuminated manuscripts

The Turner Contemporary gallery followed Thursday night's opening of a new exhibition at the British library. Manuscripts that once belonged to medieval kings and queens were on display. The new exhibition showcases more than 150 hand-illustrated documents.

Both Prince Philip and the Queen had a private viewing of five manuscripts prior to the official opening, including a psalter owned by Henry VIII, with notes penned by the famous king himself. Visitors to the British Library can see the manuscripts until March 13, 2012.
