AFP reports Tunisia’s Interior Minister Lotfi ben Jeddou, speaking to members of parliament during an address to the National Constituent Assembly on Thursday, Sept. 20, said the country must slow the stream of young Tunisian women leaving for Syria to engage in “sexual jihad.”
The minister said that women and teenage girls “are being swapped between 20, 30 and 100 rebels and they come back bearing the fruit of sexual contacts in the name of sexual jihad, and we are silent doing nothing and standing idle.”
The sexual jihad, known as “Jihad al-nikah,” permits Islamic women to engage in extramarital sexual relations with multiple partners, and is considered by some hardline Sunni Muslim Salafists as a legitimate form of holy war.
RT reports the sexual Jihad Fatwa allows for fighters to enter sexual relations with a woman after agreeing upon a temporary contract that loses effect after a few hours. The temporary nature of the contract allows the woman to have sex with multiple partners a day.
Media reports indicate hundreds of Tunisian women have travelled to Syria to engage in this religiously sanctioned form of prostitution. The Tunisian women and girls are following the hundreds of Tunisian men who have already gone to join the ranks of the jihadists fighting to bring down the regime of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad.
