When you just don’t have time or energy to make a meal, stop spending more money than you need to. Here's a fast way to save money and eat at home with simple ingredients that you should have in your pantry and refrigerator at all times.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans of tuna
  • a couple of tablespoons of your favorite mayonnaise
  • salt and pepper to taste

Tastier ingredients: What I like to add to my tuna salad include:

  • a tablespoon of sweet pickle relish
  • my favorite dry seasoning like Mrs. Dash if you don’t or can’t have added salt

Extra ingredients but takes more time: Some people will boil an egg and chop it up along with fresh celery pieces – to place in their tuna salad. The problem with this is that the “easy” in making a sandwich just entered the zone of “cooking” when you need to boil water; besides the egg-yolk adds cholesterol. You can skip this or better yet, you could go to your local market if you had to buy tuna and didn’t have it in your pantry and buy one boiled egg, some deli sections will sell individual boiled eggs.

Mix all the ingredients together and apply to your favorite bread or if you’re trying to cut the carbs use a leaf of romaine lettuce as it’s nice and crunchy, will hold the tuna well in the middle of the leaf and enjoy. If you’re making the sandwich, toast it or right out of the bag, top with your favorite fresh veggies: lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, or whatever you have on hand. Tuna tastes great on your favorite cracker too.

Alternatives: If you’re trying to cut calories, you can use the tuna packed in water instead of the tuna packed in oil. There are several different types of tuna, if you don’t see the type that you grew up with, try one can and add less mayonnaise. Basically the mayo is just to help you keep the tuna together. If you don’t like mayo there are other types of substitutes that don’t have egg (vegan type mayo) or use your favorite salad dressing that has a creamy texture. If you’re experimenting with dressings, I would suggest you try a little bit of the tuna and dressing so if you don’t like the taste you won’t end up tossing the entire mixture.

If you get bored with tuna salad mixed with mayo you can always get a fresh salad and dump a can of tuna on top, mix and enjoy. Tuna in a can is affordable and packs great protein in a can. Enjoy and check out my other recipes below.
