Tulsa kept itself on top in the Conference USA softball after edging East Carolina this past weekend at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Aimee Creger (19-1) was the winning pitcher in both wins. She had 15 strikeouts in both combined.
In Sunday’s finale, the Golden Hurricane (38-5 overall, 12-2 in Conference USA) found themselves down 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning before exploding for five runs. The game-tying run came on an RBI double by Shelby Blanton, who led TU in batting with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring Jill Barrett. The go-ahead run came on an RBI bases-loaded walk from Cierra Hughes.
Barrett finished 2-for-4 in the game.
Tulsa trailed 5-1 in Saturday’s opener, before surging for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, on the account of a two-RBI triple from Shelby Blanton, a three-shot home run by Jill Roye, and solo homers from Kernon and Cierra Hughes.
Kernon would add another solo-shot homer in the sixth. TU would get two more runs.
Catherine Horner led the Golden Hurricane with a 3-for-4 performance in that game. Kernon, Blanton and Henshaw all went 2-for-4 in that game.
TU incurred a 10-2 run-rule defeat in the second game. It averted the shut out in the bottom of the fifth with groundout RBIs from Roye and Julie Kernon, scoring Barrett and Blanton, respectively.
Sarah Christian (15-6) got the pitching win for East Carolina (21-17, 10-8) while the loss went to Bailey Erwin (10-2).
Barrett led TU at the plate going 2-for-3.
