James Woodard led a quintet of double-digit scorers as Tulsa cruised to a 98-71 victory against Texas Southern Wednesday night at the Reynolds Center.
The win was much needed for TU, who went through November losing six of its first seven games.
Woodard scored 25 points for TU (2-6), who picked up its second win of the season. Rashad Smith got a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Pat Swilling Jr. also scored 14 for the Golden Hurricane, Shaquille Harrison logged 11 and Rashad Ray scored 10.
Tulsa faced early deficits of 11-2 and 17-9, then responded with a 13-0 run to take the lead for good.
A 3-point basket by Texas Southern’s Ray Penn brought the Tigers (3-6) to within 27-26. TU rolled from that point.
Baskets by Ray and Lew Evans brought the score to 44-32 before halftime.
Tulsa shot 54 percent (36-of-67) from the field, hit 52 percent (11-of-21) in 3s and was 65 percent (15-of-23) from the free throw line.
Texas Southern shot 42 percent (20-of-48) from the field, hit 32 percent (7-of-22) in 3s and was 69 percent (24-of-35) from the free throw line.
The Tigers were led by Aaric Murray’s game-high 30 points, Aaron Clayborn’s 16 points and Penn’s 12 points.
Tulsa meets UALR Saturday at home. The game, scheduled to tip off at 3:30 p.m., will be the back end of a doubleheader with the women, who play the same school at 1 p.m.
