University of the People is a tuition-free online institution that aims to reach all students that wish to obtain a college education. It is fully accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council, a national accrediting group. It offers courses that include business administration and computer science programs.

Now there is an affordable opportunity for access to higher education. It is comprised of students from around the world who will be supported by instructors and their fellow students. They will share resources, exchange ideas, discuss weekly topics, submit assignments and take weekly exams. The curriculum is also supported by respected scholars who participate in class discussions and oversee assignment process.

Creator of University of the People Shai Reshef expects that by 2016 there will be about 5000 students enrolled. This is based on the fact that Distance learning is a growing way to obtain a college education. A survey conducted by the Sloan Consortium found that there are approximately 4 million students who are already enrolled in online education.

Reschef has been quoted as saying

  • The idea is to reach hundreds of millions of people who graduated high school, have all the ability and the right to study in an academic institution, but cannot do it either because they don’t have the money….

To qualify applicants must be

  • 18 years old or older
  • Proficient in English
  • Must have proof of high school completion
  • Lives in an American state that accepts the accreditation of the University of the People

At the present time fees are waived but this could change in the future so those applying to the University of the People should have this clarified before applying for admission
