The "American Gangster" is taking his talents to Brazil and there won’t be any shortage of insults.
There has been a lot of banter going on for the last few months between the two fighters, and even coming close to trading punchess, with Silva approaching Sonnen at a convention. Its obvious Sonnen has struck a few nerves with the former Pride Middleweight Champion.
The insults Sonnen brings to the table is his uncanny ability to tear apart the inside of his opponents. He can take words twist them around and make people feel like he is the good guy. However, Sonnen doesn’t care if he is the good guy or bad guy. As long as he can break down people with his insults and and tweets, he feels he already has an advantage.
The problem is too many people believe Sonnen is WWE’ing the MMA sport. He goes into a fight insulting the man across the cage but in the end the only thing that matters when the door is locked and punches are exchanged. The reading between the lines is something that is just a mirage because, the selling of fights is in his blood.
Within the WWE the wrestlers are athletes, but the matches are scripted and things are predetermined before they enter the ring. With MMA, there is no escape, no move calls during a fight and it’s as real as it gets.
Sonnen carries a lot of heart and soul into his fights and with Silva it will be magnified. He has been calling out him for quite a while on social media and Silva refused to take the bait. But now there is no decision to be had, as after the TUF Brazil finishes, they will face off.
With this version of TUF, it is only aired in Brazil. Once filming begins and the fireworks begin to fire, there will be a way for United States fans to get their fill of the rivalry. The hatred is there, the tension is there and the buildup will be something that will be must see TV.
Going to Brazil will be a difficult journey for Sonnen and trying to bring in Anderson Silva as a coach and “body guard” only makes him that much smarter. Sonnen will use Silva as a crutch and a peace maker of sorts with the fans and locals. With the unkind words he has made in the past about the country, keeping the “Spider” in his corner is brilliance.
Not many casual MMA fans are interested in the other TUF shows that don’t air on local TV. With TUF Brazil the coaching rivalry is there and when Sonnen first touches ground in Sao Paulo there will be tons of eyes focused on the future opponent of their countryman.
TUF Brazil: 3 will bring in the ratings the UFC is looking for but the icing on the cake is that two coaches will face off in the cage. That will be the payoff that the fans and business partners alike will appreciate.
You can thank Chael P. Sonnen.
