The Central Iowa Concert Calendar for Tuesday, August 19 is headed by on again, off again Wu-Tang Clan contributor Cappadonna. The rapper was originally scheduled to perform at the Gas Lamp in Des Moines on July 26, but he had to reschedule due to a "scheduling conflict".
Cappadonna, a Staten Island native, was a part of the formation of what would eventually become the Wu-Tang Clan, but he was, unfortunately, incarcerated before the group was fully formed and was replaced by Method Man. Cappadonna would return later, however, to record on a number on Wu-Tang albums, as well as the solo albums of many of the group's members. The rapper is often referred to now as Wu-Tang's "unofficial tenth member". As a solo artist, Cappadonna has released eight studio albums. The rapper's latest album, entitled Hook Off, was released on June 17. Cappadonna has also teamed up with Wu-Tang's Ghostface Killah and a number of other Staten Island rappers to form the collective Theodore Unit. TU released a studio album in 2004 entitled 718 and a mixtape two years later called NY's Backbone.
Tuesday's Gas Lamp show will kick off at 6 p.m. The show is open to all ages, and Cappadonna is rumored to be bringing along a special guest. Admission will be $10 at the door.
Also on Tuesday, Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines will host alternative pop/rock group Archie Powell & The Exports. The son of a Chicago Symphony Orchestra violinist, Archie Powell took up guitar at age 11 and began writing songs four years later. Powell formed Archie Powell & The Exports after graduating college. The Chicago natives released their third album, entitled Back in Black, in April. Des Moines rock bands Easy Fruit and The Dirty Kids will open the show. The 9 p.m. concert is a 21-and-over affair and will have a $5 cover charge.
