“You cannot serve both God and Money.” Matthew 6:24c
I remember an old R & B song sung by the group the O’Jays called “For the Love of Money”. An old song that was reprised by the television show, The Apprentice, a contest of wills where people vie for the opportunity to work for hotel mogul, Donald Trump. The lyrics of the song are catchy – and some deadly. Here are few of the lyrics for your consideration:
“Money, money, money, money, money…”
“Some people got to have it…”
“For the love of money
People will steal from their mother
For the love of money
People will rob their own brother”
“For that lean, mean, mean green
Almighty dollar, money”
“For the love of money
People will lie, Lord, they will cheat
For the love of money
People don't care who they hurt or beat
For the love of money
A woman will sell her precious body
For a small piece of paper
It carries a lot of weight
Call it lean, mean, mean green”
Catchy, deadly and dangerous lyrics – just like serving money and the getting it occupies your reason for living. Instead of money being used as a tool - to live and to serve others, the entire world, including many Christians are overly-concerned about how much money they have, how much money they need and how much they want. This is exactly what Jesus said in the Holy Bible, Matthews 6:24, “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”
God knows that we need finances to pay our bills, debts, and live. Budgeting, debt free exercises and even giving to the church are good and in order to develop good stewardship – but not to just GET MORE MONEY! If you are spending a lot of time talking, working, looking, spending, lusting, pursuing, to get more and more MONEY, you are headed to a dead end road – an even an eternal end.
Serving money means money is mastering you – your lifestyle, your attitude, your thoughts, and your behavior. God, not money is the Only “Almighty One”. You must choose today to allow God to master you and your finances.
