World War Z

Loosely based on the Max Brooks novel of the same name, this is the story about United Nations employee Gerry Lane, dispatched by the government to travel the world in search of a way to keep its human inhabitants from becoming their neighbors’ lunch. That’s right: a zombie epidemic. With time running out, can Gerry find a way to stop what armies and governments have thus far failed to?

Drift

Hang-ten! Brothers in 70s Australia are on the run from their alcoholic father when they decide to squat near the great swells of the Australian coast. But the family soon learns they have more to content with than just each other. Battling killer waves, conservative society, and ruthless bikers, the two young men fight their way toward kick-starting the modern surf industry as we know it today.

The Bling Ring

Based on a series of true events, director Sofia Coppola brings to the screen the tale of the young teenagers who would stake out Hollywood celebrities’ homes via social networks, then rob them once they’d gone out to whichever party or social gathering for the evening. With equal parts social commentary and trashy kitsch linings, this film is sure to be a (like totally) eye-opening experience.

The East

“You don’t know a person’s story until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” It’s a phrase all of us have heard at one point or another – but what if we applied it to something as “gray” as an anarchist group or terrorist organization? In this film by Zal Batmanglij (who also co-wrote the screenplay, based on his own experiences as part of an anarchist group), an operative for an elite private intelligence firm is tasked with infiltrating a group known for executing covert attacks upon major corporations. The plan goes off the beaten path, however, when the operative begins to befriend the underground group’s members and falls for its leader.

Scenic Route

A different sort of “road trip gone-wrong” film, the Goetz brothers paint a grim picture for two friends who find themselves stranded on a lone desert road after their truck breaks down. Tensions rise and the two life-long friends begin attacking one another for the decisions either has made leading up to the story’s nexus. An existentialist drama as dry as the desert air.

Java Heat

Following a suicide bombing in Indonesia, a reckless American bent on revenge realizes that the world’s problems can’t be solved with violence alone. Teaming up with Muslim cop Hashim, the two team up to take down a dangerous jewel thief and save a Sultan’s daughter, all the while traversing through ancient palaces, temples, subterranean labyrinths, and stone pyramids.

The Last Tycoon

The ultimate workaholic is brought to the silver screen in this adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of the same name. Monroe Stahr, a movie producer, begins to slowly work himself to his death bed amidst the chaos of the 1930 film industry.

Gimme the Loot

What lengths would you go to toward leaving your mark? For two graffiti artists, they decide to tag the NY Mets Apple after a rival crew ruins their latest masterpiece. Scrambling under the sweltering heat of a two-day whirlwind of scheming, stealing, and executing, will the two writers achieve their goal of becoming the most famous in New York?

Two Men in Manhattan

Two men, played by director Jean-Pierre Melville and Pierre Grasset as his photographer colleague, come across the body of a French diplomat and ex-Resistance, having died from a heart attack in an actress’ apartment. The two are then left with the decision of whether to tarnish the man’s reputation while lifting their own to new heights, preserving his dignity by just calling the cops, or staying out of the whole debacle. Find out!

Bless Me, Ultima

A different sort of WWII story, House of Cards director Carl Franklin brings to the screen the story about a young boy and elderly medicine woman who work together to keep their village from falling apart under a contention between the inner forces of human good and evil.
