Two Tulsa athletes from different sports were honored Tuesday when they were announced as Conference USA Male Athlete of the Week by the league for accomplishments in their respective sports this past weekend.
Chris O’Hare earned the honors in track and field.
O’ Hare, a junior from Edinburgh, Scotland, won the 1,000-meters event at the Meyo Invitational with a time of 2:20.99, a record for each the school, the meet and the track.
It’s the second honor of the year for TU. Julian Frazier was recognized for the same award two weeks ago.
Ashley Watling, a senior from Ipswich, England, received a similar recognition in men’s tennis.
Watling won all four if his matches this past weekend in 23rd-ranked Tulsa’s matches against No. 24 Texas Tech and No. 25 San Diego State. That included an upset of No. 23 Gonzolo Escobar of Texas Tech (2-6, 6-1, 6-3) on Friday. His other victory came Sunday against Patrick Pohlmann of San Diego State (7-5, 1-6, 6-2).
Watling has a 4-2 singles record and 5-2 in doubles so far this season.
The Golden Hurricane (2-5) split their matches this past weekend at the Case Tennis Center.
They beat Texas Tech, 5-2, last Friday.
Besides Watling’s upset win, TU got wins from Clifford Marsland, Lucian Gheorghe and Alejandro Sanchez in the singles competition, while the teams of Watling/Marsland and Gheorghe/Sanchez won their doubles matches.
But on Sunday, Tulsa fell in 4-3 decision to San Diego State.
Tristan Jackson and Sanchez also got wins in the singles matches, while Watling/Marslund were the only winners in doubles for TU.
