Tsunami, earthquake and life’s fragility

Waking up this morning to the news of the earthquake in Japan and the Tsunami warnings in Hawaii, reminds us of life’s fragility. Just think, people went to bed the night before with the full expectation that they would awaken to life as they know it. Instead, some have lost friends, relatives and co-workers, buildings have toppled, and there’s no phone service to check on the status of loved ones. As devastating as these events are, they also serve as a reminder that we should not take life for granted. Is there someone you meant to call, but got too busy to dial the number? Is there someone you’ve been meaning to visit, but just haven’t gotten around to it? Is there someone you meant to say ‘thank you’ to, or ‘I love you" to, but you figured you will do it the next time you see them?

Nobody likes to dwell on the inevitable—death—but we all need to learn to live today (and every day) with no regrets and as if it’s our last day on earth because the reality is, we never know when it will be.

As the disheveled lives of those in the news are pieced back together as best they can be, let’s pray for those impacted by these natural disasters, and let’s purpose in our hearts that going forward nothing meaningful will be left unspoken, undone or put off until tomorrow. Life is too short.

2 Peter 3:10, "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare."
