Men’sHealth Ultimate Dumbbell Guide: More than 21,000 Moves Designed to Build Muscle, Increase Strength, and Burn Fat by Myatt Murphy
Call number: 613.713 MUR
The Ultimate Dumbbell Guide, published in conjunction with Men’sHealth in 2007, is a fantastic book for anybody—guy or girl—interested in adding dumbbell weight exercises into his or her routines. Whether you have just started exercising or are a seasoned veteran, you are sure to find some tip on exercise you haven’t thought of using.
The book is separated into three parts—“The Truth about Dumbbells,” “The Master Moves,” and “A Million Moves for Your Muscles.” The first section is dedicated to familiarizing yourself with the different types of dumbbells and how they help you develop muscle. The second is the actual workout moves. And the third shows you how to create a dumbbell workout personalized for you.
Abs, arms, back, chest, legs, and shoulders are all targeted. The exercises use a pair of dumbbells, and, optionally, a ball, mat, and bench. Moves ranged from beginner, intermediate, and intermediate “plus” moves, along with more advanced combine and conquer! moves for more seasoned weight lifters.
At the end of the book, Murphy demonstrates how to combine any of the moves for various combine and conquer! exercises to challenge your workout. Plus, he has created four different pre-made plans for you to follow, from beginner to intermediate “plus.”
Pros:
- Excellent picture demonstrations, illustrating each step.
- Detailed, easily-understood written instructions
- Every exercise tells all the muscles worked
- Well-organized workout plans
Cons:
- None! (note: it is strictly a dumbbell workout book, so if you are looking for a full cardio-workout-diet book, know this isn’t it)
