Behind the blue door on 13th street is the Healing District, an un-spa place for bodywork beyond the normal massage.
In the hands of Sioux Barrry, treatments become life-enhancing.
As the massage therapist for DC United, Barry worked with team players during all phases of training. At the upscale Mandarin Oriental Hotel on the Southwest waterfront, her traditional Thai ritual won national recognition. Study in India at an ashram in Rishikesh added the science of yoga to her bodywork.
Always knowing that she wanted to teach yoga and massage, Sioux was formally trained in her native Australia as a Remedial Therapist (1500+ hours), which enabled her to delve deeply into clinical treatment. Two years in Thailand were devoted to spiritual practices, massage, and herbal medicine.
Having experienced Sioux’s Thai ritual at the Mandarin Oriental, I was impressed by her synthesis of Asian and American traditions. So when we met up recently at a Washington Spa Alliance event, it was good to learn that her studio in the burgeoning U Street corridor often is fully booked.
Sioux believes that Thai massage is a perfect culmination of deep tissue, orthopedic, and sports massage, energy work, stretching and assisted yoga postures for bringing health, vigor and rehabilitation to her clients. Her work draws on techniques from many modalities and healing traditions, creating a treatment plan specific to the needs of the individual
