Next Tuesday, Sept. 29 is National Coffee Day, and some folks will be enjoying a nice cup of ... cat poop? Well, technically, it's civet poop, but because of the animal's cat-like appearance and size — and the fact that civets are in the same sub-order as all felines — the unofficial name for the coffee is "cat-poop coffee."
The official name for the delicious drink is Kopi Luwak, and it's unordinary in another way: it's the most expensive coffee in the world, selling for $200 to $300 per pound.
The civet or "luwak" is found in Indonesia and other South Asian countries. The omnivour eats mainly berries that contain beans, but can't digest the beans, which pass right through the animal's system — thus, "cat-poop" coffee.
While the rare beans aren't found in every coffee shop, National Coffee Day may bring some attention to the exotic drink. Where can this be found in Texas? Rao's Bakery in Beaumont, which gave away free samples of Kopi Luwak last month, says they know they'll be selling it sometime soon but customers can contact the manager to order it specially.
