National Gospel Recording Artist and Stellar Award Nominee, Todd Dulaney, has taken the Gospel music industry by storm. Recently, the Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner talked with Dulaney, who is a former Major League Baseball player, to find out the inspiration behind his debut CD, what it was like working with a Grammy Award winning artist and his excitement around the best song he has written so far in his career.
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- Good afternoon Todd! Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to me today. Tell us a little about yourself.
Todd Dulaney- Well, I am originally from Maywood, Illinois and I had the opportunity to play professional baseball for the New York Mets for five years. One night, I attended a church service and I got caught up in the worship. I gave my life to the Lord on that night and ever since that moment, God turned my life around. I immediately began looking for a church home and I wanted to find a place that would allow me to grow spiritually. Some people that I knew kept mentioning Dr. Bill Winston and his church [Living Word Christian Center in Forest Park, Illinois]. I visited his church and I immediately fell in love with Dr. Winston’s teaching [of the Word of God].
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- Being able to play professional sports is a dream for some athletes. Why did you make the transition to music?
Todd Dulaney- Secretly, I knew that I had a gift as I would sing in the shower and all around the house (laughs). I started singing on the praise team at church. It was at that point that I soon began to realize the musical calling that God had on my life. I would go on to receiving an invitation to travel and perform background vocals for Smokie Norful.
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- How did you connect with GoldStreet Gospel?
Todd Dulaney- One night, I was at church during a faith conference that was being held and a gentleman walked up to me. He shared with me that the Lord told him to connect with me and that he may have some opportunities for me in the future. I did not hear from him until three months later. At that time, he mentioned that he knew some people who were starting a new Gospel label (Gold Street) and they were looking for artists. As a result, I ended up signing with Gold Street and my single, “Pulling Me Through”, ended up becoming the first single that the label released.
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- Your single, “Simply Amazing”, features Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child. How did that collaboration come about?
Todd Dulaney- Actually, Michelle is from Rockford, Illinois and I would see her in passing every now and then. When I first heard “Simply Amazing“, I thought that it needed a ladies voice to help enhance the message. So, I finished writing the lyrics and sent a copy of the song to Michelle. When she heard it, she told me that she was in tears. I asked her if she would mind singing it with me and she said that she would love to. When Michelle came into the studio, she was super humble. I mean, here I am working with a multiple award winning artist who was very open to receiving instruction. In fact, she would say to me, “Tell me what to do!” She allowed me to lead her during the recording of the song which was really a blessing.
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- What are your favorite songs off of [Pulling Me Through]”?
Todd Dulaney- Wow…that’s really hard for me to choose (laughs). I really like “Pulling Me Through”. When I felt like my baseball career was over and I was wondering how I was going to make it, God blessed me and let me know that He was always there. He gave me a testimony in that moment! I also like "No Other Name" and "Simply Amazing". Again, hard to narrow it down.
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- What are you currently working on?
Todd Dulaney- I am getting ready to head into the studio to record my next CD which will probably come out in early 2014. For this project, I have written probably the best song in my career entitled, “Trusting in You”. This song was written out of the pain that I have experienced being an artist in this industry. No matter what I have had to endure, God was not going to walk away and abandon me. Jesus Christ is the only name that saves and provides comfort. I am so excited about this song and the message behind it!
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- What advice would you give to up and coming artists?
Todd Dulaney- I would suggest that up and coming artists should not limit themselves to just the Gospel music industry. Why can’t a Gospel artist envision performing on Good Morning America? As Gospel artists, allow God to bring you into whatever He desires!
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- How can your listeners keep in contact with you?
Todd Dulaney- One of the best ways is via FaceBook as I am very interactive with my fans. I am also active on Twitter (@ToddDulaney) as I retweet and post pictures from events.
Baltimore Gospel Music Examiner- Thanks again Todd for your time! God bless you and your ministry!
