Trump drops party affiliation, possible step in presidential run

Entrepreneur and financier Donald Trump took a step Friday that could be a prelude to a run for the White House. Once a rumored Republican candidate, Trump has more recently been positioning himself to run as an independent once his television program, The Apprentice, concludes for the season.

Trump is not able to run as a Republican without having to give up his television program. By the time the show ends, the primary season will have progressed too far for Trump to lodge a successful campaign. However by switching to Independent Trump would not be able to run as a Republican in New York, a state rich in Electoral College members – even if drafted by the party.

Unlike New York, Michigan voters are not required to state party affiliation. Instead affiliation is determined by the partisan primary in which the person last voted.

Independent candidates are not required to go through a primary run but will still need to gain the required number of signatures to have their name on the ballot in each state.
